In South America, U�a de Gato has a long folkloric use as a wound healer and for treating intestinal ailments. Peru's inhabitants use it as an anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic as well as in treating gastric ulcers, gonorrhea, dysentery and all problems related to the feminine reproductive system.

The herb is also used for treating arthritis, gastric ulcers, intestinal disorders and some skin problems.

It is especially noted for its antiviral and tumor dissolving properties, its effect on cellular regeneration and cardiovascular repair.
