Recognized Uses:
The therapeutic use of Licorice Roots date back to the Roman empire when it was recommended as an expectorant and carminative. Licorice Roots also figure prominently in Chinese herbal medicine as an agent which exerts godly influence on the body and acts to lengthen life. Licorice is a popular herbal remedy, mainly used in the treatment of gastric ulcers. It shows a beneficial anti-inflammatory effect, reduces gastric secretion and promotes healing of ulcers.1 Licorice has also been used as a remedy for cough, bronchitis and skin disease caused by allergy.1 Rose reports that Licorice contains estrogenic materials2 which may help in cases of hormonal disorders.

Contraindications:
Excessive consumption of Licorice should be avoided, particularly in cases of hypertension and cardiac or kidney insufficiency and edema.

Adverse reactions:
Potential toxicities associated with excessive consumption.

Dosage:
10 to 40 drops three or four times per day under the tongue.
