Hyperactivity (ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER) In a first year class of more than 20 pupils, we count in average one to two children victims of this disorder. In Québec, more than 5% of children are hyperactive. According to specialists, 3 to 10% of school aged children posess the diagnostic criteria. According to the Mental Health diagnostic and statistics manual " the North-American psychia-trists's bible " , this problem is characterized by the coexistance of three major symptoms hyperactivity, impulsiveness and attention span deficit. Children affected by this condition have problems organizing themselves, they always move , they are easily distracted and constantly lose things. It is difficult for them to accomplish an intellectual task, which they will try to avoid at all costs. Boys are affected three times more than girls. The cause of this condition is organic. These children suffer from a neurochemical deficit which provokes a decrease in the function of a brain area called the frontal lobe. This area is responsible for the control of certain behaviors. When one parent is affected, the child has a 50% probability of inheriting the problem. When both parents are affected, the child is almost ensured to test positively. Recent studies have shown that less than 5% of hyperactives are so because of brain lesions acquired at birth from a lack of oxygen to the brain. SOLUTIONS : Producs :
