THE CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (CFS) The CFS is a dysfunction of the immune system. It isn't however a depression. We must take this disease seriously since it is contagious. Per example, it has been noticed that pets seem to be subject to the CFS and that children may also be affected. In fact, all individuals are at risk. This disease provokes the following symptoms: difficulty to exercise, repetitive spontaneous abortions, severe cardiac irregularities, digestion problems, cerebral dysfunction due to a lack of blood sugar, and skin problems. Recent studies have shown an increased incidence of cancer and a troubling resemblance to AIDS. As a naturopath, taking this information into account, I would work on the re-establishment of the health status by reinforcing the immune system; since it is the system which is attacked most severely. Echinacea (#425), reinforces the immune system, helps to prevent and treat colds and infections related to the throat. So it seems to be well suited for the first indications of the disease. Una de Gato (#504), acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-rhumatic having anti-cancerous and immuno-stimulant properties as recognised by the National Cancer Institute. This plant is also excellent in the treatment of the CFS. P.C.-C.(#841) cleanses the blood and the liver, nourishes the healthy cells; so it is also very appropriate. The Three Bees(#877) formula, contains three of the best substances produced by bees: pollen, propolis and royal jelly acting an natural antibiotics and energizers. Propolis increases the immune system, and helps in the function of all systems. The three substances combined represent a powerful nervous system regenerator. Finally, at the naturopath's discretion, and according to the patient's disease progression, it would be pertinent to look at plants related to the digestive, hepatic and urinary systems. With many years of practice as a naturopath, I have arrived at the conclusion that none of the symptoms listed earlier can be neglected. Especially if the patient has chronic manifestations. Vigilance and active listening are crucial to detect and appropriately treat this disease still so poorly understood. Hoping that my research on the CFS will facilitate your work by increasing your understanding of this chronic disease. Naturopathically yours, Yolande Boucher Roy, n.d. |
